Friday Round Up: We Need A Resolution

Hi everyone, and welcome back to the blog.  My blog posts have been scarce lately.  I think the last time I posted something was on May 20 something.

I have written here before about my search for a day job.  Lately I have been getting nothing but rejects, and I haven't had an interview since April.  I'm getting antsy and frustrated. I'm not sure what to do anymore besides my standard routine of checking Careerbuilder, Indeed, and other sites and sending out droves of resumes.  I have even decided to apply to become a volunteer at my local public library.  See, I have been out of the workforce for a while and re-entering the working world is difficult especially when you have employment gaps.  I try to read up on what to say in an interview and job search tips.  But then, I get depressed and felt like throwing my computer across the room when I get a rejection notice.  (I don't recommend this).  Now, I don't get upset when those emails come because it's the name of the game. I just read it and file it away.

Part of the reason I started writing online in late 2009 and 2010 was to keep myself occupied and pick up some extra cash.  I needed to do more than just sit around reading books, playing Cafe World and Mall World, and checking to see what everybody was up to on Facebook.

I will be 30 in a few weeks, and I am at that point in my life where I need to make changes across the board.

  1. If I am going to make it at this whole writing business, I need to find better paying markets.  It is crazy to me to sit in front of a computer all day and even at night while Family Feud is playing in the background for $3 per product review.  Maybe it is time to kick my rear into gear and write that unfinished novel that I have been trying to write for the last few years.
  2. Over the weekend I took a look at myself in the mirror. I was wearing a blue flowery shirt, jeans, and a pair of blue Keds.  I probably look like I should be chasing five year olds around. I need to lose weight.  It's plain and simple.  But when it comes to dieting, I'm not very successful.  I have been cutting back on junk food which works most days, but this weekend I grew weak when I went to the Cheesecake Factory in Atlanta and bought white chocolate Reese cups from the gas station.  Other than my battle with snacking, I have been getting out of the house and away from my computer to go for walks.  Rome wasn't built in a day.  So this is going to take some time.  I was in Target pricing shapewear for crying out loud.  A few days ago, instead purchasing a sandwich and fries, I bought a salad for lunch.  Healthier choices right?
  3. Okay, so I started writing this post on Friday and now it is Sunday.  I am happy to report I lost three pounds.  It took me two weeks to do that.
  4. Today, I tried to log into Knoji but there seems to be a problem with the site. Maybe they are doing some web maintenance today. I hope they fix whatever is wrong. I haven't received my May payment yet. This stinks because I was planning to order some books this weekend, and I have some road trips I am going on next month amongst other things.  I have been looking for better paying writing gigs.  I regularly check  I applied to a posting and I haven't heard anything.  Also, I have discovered that LinkedIn post job listings as well.  I often times forget I have a LinkedIn, and I should be using it more. Social media is more than just a way to kill time.
  5. I do have one piece of exciting news to share.  A few weeks ago, I wrote about my discover of Black Girl Nerds. Well, I have been invited to be a guest contributor to their blog!  Now I have to figure out what I am going to write about.  How did this come about?  I sent an email commenting on various topics from the podcasts. Jamie, the host of the podcast emailed me back. How cool is that?  So I will let y'all know when the post goes up.  Who knows, this could lead to other opportunities.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and I will see you next week.
